Moldova Energy and Biomass Project empowers women in the green energy market development

Starting with 2013, UNDP Moldova within the Moldova Energy and Biomass Project is implementing the provisions of the “Gender Mainstreaming Action Plan”, developed as result of the in-depth analysis of the project’s gender equity through the gender perspective. Below, are some of the key results in 2018 with regards to the promotion of gender equality and mainstreaming gender in project activities.
Women trained in green energy  
In order to promote expansion of renewable energy at local level a total of 41 trainings were conducted. Trainings aimed at enhancing capacities of representatives of local government, civil servants, managers, biomass boiler operators, agricultural enterprises and entrepreneurs intending to produce biomass fuel, current biomass fuel suppliers, students and women entrepreneurs in (i) resource mobilization, (ii) participatory monitoring and evaluation of biomass heating projects and (iii) management and implementation of biomass projects. Energy and Biomass Project concludes its activity after a 7 years mandate
199,000 people benefit from affordable and clean energy, produced in the Republic of Moldova. This is the main effect of the Moldova Energy and Biomass Project, financed by the European Union and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). During 2011-2018, 265 schools, kindergartens, community facilities and hospitals switched from heating on coal and gas to biomass energy. 70 of these institutions have gained access to hot water produced by solar energy.

European support: Energy from biomass brings warmth and comfort to the school of Mosana village, Donduseni

The cold in the classrooms and the hallways will remain a memory for the students and teachers in the Mosana school, Donduseni district. Starting this autumn, the institution gave up the old heating system in favour of a new modern biomass power plant, that will provide eco-friendly heat at fair prices. The new environment-friendly technologies have been installed with the support of the European Union, within the framework of the Energy and Biomass Project, implemented by the United Nations Development Programme.
In the school of Mosana, a locality densely populated by Ukrainian ethnics, 150 children are studying, 20 of them coming by bus from three neighbouring localities where there are no educational institutions.

European support: a modern biomass heating system was installed at the kindergarten in Horesti, Ialoveni

The Kindergarten in Horesti, Ialoveni, gave up the old natural gas heating system and switched to clean energy. From the current autumn, the heat in the institution will be provided by biomass, and hot water – by solar energy.  Over 230 children and 30 employees will benefit of better conditions. The investment was possible thanks to the financial support of the European Union provided by the Energy and Biomass Project, implemented by the United Nations Development Program.
The old heating system in the Horesti kindergarten was morally and physically obsolete. Sun and biomass bring clean energy to the kindergarten of Lozova, Straseni

Solar and biomass energy bring clean energy and reduce the bills for heating and hot water in the kindergarten “Speranta” from Lozova village, Straseni district. Since autumn, the institution will have a modern biomass heating plant and solar panels. Modern technologies are installed with the European Union support within the Moldova Biomass and Energy Project implemented by the United Nations Development Programme.
The new system will generate hot water throughout the year and heating during cold season in the two blocks of the kindergarten and one of the buildings where the primary school is located. In total, over 500 children and teaching staff will benefit of better conditions.
